Biographical History

The Lakeville History Group was founded in 1930 by a group of women historians who had been excluded from a male historians' conference. Membership was open to women teaching in various eastern colleges; most members were from New England. The group met once a year socially, worked for the recognition of women in the American Historical Association, encouraged research in women's history, and supported proposals to improve the status of women in the profession. Its present name was adopted in about 1936.
