Biographical History
Chemical manufacturer Henrik Johannes Krebs was born in Denmark in 1847 and after emigrating to the United States, founded the Delaware Chemical Company in 1886. Two years later, it merged with other firms to form the National Ammonia Company, a major manufacturer of ammonia for use in refrigeration and ice-making. In 1901, Krebs founded the Krebs Pigment & Chemical Company at Newport, Del., and was its president until 1918, when he was succeeded by his son, A. Sonnin Krebs. At the elder Krebs's death in 1929, the business was sold to E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company.
