Biographical History
William Owen Baldwin (1895-1987) was born in Montgomery, Ala., to Abram Martin (A.M.) Baldwin (1860-1931) and Elizabeth DeGraffenreid Ewin (1863-1951). A.M. Baldwin was the son of Dr. William Owen Baldwin (1818-1886) and Mary Jane Martin (1822-1878). Dr. Baldwin, in addition to being a notable Montgomery physician and serving as president of the American Medical Association in 1868, was cofounder, in 1871, and first president of the First National Bank of Montgomery. In 1898 A.M. Baldwin also became president of the bank, serving until 1929, when he stepped down to become chairman of the board of directors, a position he held until his death.
The younger William O. Baldwin attended several schools and colleges. He graduated in 1914 from Marion Institue, Marion, Ala., with a B.A., and then from the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md., in 1917. His Navy career consisted of both active and reserve duty and lasted until 1957, when he retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve as a captain. Baldwin became a vice president of the First National Bank in 1926; he retired in 1960 and was appointed to the bank's board of directors. Baldwin also was involved in numerous business and civic activities, including philanthropy. He was married briefly (1937-1938) to Katherine Steiner Baldwin; they had no children.
