Altholz, Josef L.

Josef L. Altholz, B.A. (1954) Cornell University; M.A. (1955), Ph.D. (1960) Columbia University. Professor of history at the University of Minnesota (1959-2000). Expert in the field of 19th century English history.

Josef Lewis Altholz was born on August 14, 1933 in New York City. He attended Cornell University, earning his B.A. in history in 1954. He then went on to earn his M.A. (1955) and Ph.D. (1960) in history from Columbia University. Before joining the faculty at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Altholz served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957. In 1959, Dr. Altholz became an instructor of history at the University of Minnesota, moving up to the rank of professor in 1967. His specialty was 19th century English history. In addition to his teaching duties at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Altholz was the president of the American Catholic Historical Association (1986-1987) and founder of the Society for Victorian Periodicals conference. He retired from the University in May of 2003 and died on August 2, 2003.
