Biographical History
Hugh McCallum Donaldson was born in 1913 in Glasgow, Scotland. He attended Largs High School and Ardrossan Academy before going on to study at the University of Glasgow between 1932-1937 .
In 1932-1933 he studied mathematics, history and Italian. Then in 1933-1934 he studied English, moral philosophy, Italian and Scottish history and literature. In 1934-1935 he studied Italian, botany and Scottish history and literature, graduating with an MA degree in June 1935 . In session 1935-1936 he returned to study for a BSc in the faculty of science, attending classes in natural philosophy, chemistry and geology. The following session, his last at the University, was spent studying mathematics and organic chemistry. Hugh obtained a BSc degree in 1937 . He achieved a distinction in the higher ordinary cass of Scottish history and literature in session 1934-1935 . In session 1936-1937 he received a second class certificate in senior organic chemistry.
After graduation Hugh undertook teacher training at Jordanhill College , Glasgow . After qualifying he started his teaching career at Dalry High School and, immediately after the War, was appointed maths teacher at Largs High School. He became Principal Teacher of mathematics at Largs shortly afterwards. On three occasions he was elected Vice-President of the Scottish Secondary Teachers Association and was also elected a governor of Jordanhill College of Education for the four years prior to his retirement.
Hugh McCallum Donaldson died in 1990 .
