Bainbridge joined the Navy in 1798 and fought in the Barbary Wars. During the War of 1812, he attacked and destroyed HMS Java when he was commanding officer of USS Constitution.

William Bainbridge, son of Absolom and ? (Taylor) Bainbridge, was born in Princeton, New Jersey, May 7, 1774. After tutoring with his grandfather, John Taylor, he went to sea at the age of fifteen. His naval career included service against the Barbary States, in the War of 1812, as a captain and part-owner of a merchant ship. He was made captain in 1800, and commodore in 1808. He and his wife Susan Hyleger had one son and four daughters. He died of pneumonia in Philadelphia, July 27, 1833. (from Dic. Am. Bio.) (Blue index cards)
