Biographical History

Oregon War Industries, Inc. (1942-1946) was a consortium of Oregon manufacturers created primarily for the purpose of obtaining orders from the federal government to produce war materials. It used its members' factories and cooperative facilities to make better products and to obtain more contracts. The Oregon War Industries prepared bids for work, ensured that production was ready to meet delivery schedules, shipped products, and invoiced parties. Oregon War Industries' primary contractor was the U.S. Maritime Commission (U.S.M.C.), which purchased parts and equipment to be installed in Liberty cargo ships and tankers. O.W.I. also produced a steam engine, 6-foot steel spools, ladders, bolts, and rudders.
