Biographical History

Édouard Lartet was a French paleontologist.

Originally trained for the law, Lartet studied natural history on his own. After identifying a mastodon tooth found on his property in Gers, he adopted paleontology as his vocation. Lartet's work on fossil mammals led him to an interest in human evolution and the search for antiquities and prehistoric art. Reliquiae aquitanicae, recording his work in collaboration with the English collector, Henry Christy, on the excavations in the region of Périgord, began publication in 1865. Lartet's son, Louis, was also a paleontologist.
