John Forbes Davenport, of Montgomery County (Ala.), was a private and corporal in Company G, 23rd Battalion, Alabama Sharpshooters, during the Civil War. According to the Office of Adjutant General records he enlisted on 14 May 1862 at Montgomery, Ala. He joined the 1st Battalion, Company G, Hilliard's Legion, which was later combined with other companies to create the 23rd Alabama Regiment Shapshooters. The company muster roll for July and August list him as "killed by a minnie from enemy's gun, July 9, 1864, near Petersburg, Virginia."
