Eddy, Manton S. (Manton Sprague), 1892-1962

Manton Sprague Eddy (1892-1962) was born in Chicago, Illinois. In 1918 he commissioned in the infantry and served in World War I with the 4th Division of the American Expeditionary Forces. From 1921 to 1924, he was a member of the Infantry Board. After graduating from the Command and General Staff School in 1934, he taught there until 1939. From 1940 to 1942, he was assistant chief of staff for intelligence at the III Corps Area. He also served as commander of the 114th Infantry, 44th Division, from 1941 to 1942. During World War II, he rose to the rank of brigadier general in March 1942 and major general in August of the same year. From 1942 to 1944, he served as assistant division commander, then commanding general, of the 9th Infantry Division. In 1944 he became commanding general of XII Corps. His postwar assignments included commanding general of the Command and General Staff School, from 1948 to 1950, and deputy commander of U.S. European Command. He served as commanding general of Seventh Army from July 1950 until his retirement in March 1953 at the rank of lieutenant general. He received the Distinguished Service Cross, two Distinguished Service Medals, the Silver Star, two Legions of Merit, two Bronze Stars, and Purple Heart.
