Biographical History
The Central of Georgia Railway, formed from its predecessor, The Central Railroad and Banking Company of Georgia in 1895 was a dominant force in the economic life of Georgia and parts of Alabama through the mid-twentieth century. Through its many branch and subsidiary lines, land holding companies, and agricultural experimentation, it controlled much of the region's transportation and was a strong influence in the rural development of the area.
(Cont.) The Savannah and Atlanta Railway Company, a Delaware based company was incorporated on November 21,1938 to take over the reorganizing Savannah and Atlanta Railway Company of Georgia and the Savannah and Northwestern Railway, also of Georgia.
(Cont.) The Savannah and Atlanta Railway Company of Delaware came under the control of the Port Wentworth Corporation. In 1950, the stock owned by the Port Wentworth Corporation was sold to the Empire Land Company, a subsidiary of the Central of Georgia Railway. During the following year, the Central of Georgia officially took control of the Empire Land Company, including control of the Savannah and Atlanta of Delaware.
