Biographical History

Located in Taunton, Mass., the company began in 1843 as William Mason and Company with financial backing from J.K. Mills and Company, Boston commission agents. The factory built cotton and wool machinery, especially the self-acting mule for which Mason held patents. It also built machine tools, blowers, cupola furnaces, gearings and shafting. In the 1850's, the company began producing Mason's own model of locomotive which included a new spoked wheel. In 1873 the company was incorporated and its name changed to Mason Machine Works. In 1905 the company was one of seven to purchase the Saco-Lowell Shops. The 1920's saw the end of family control of the company, which now limited itself to manufacturing cotton machinery parts. By 1949 the business had dwindled and the company became known as Textile Parts Incorporated.
