Charles Downing Lay, landscape architect, painter, writer, etcher; New York, Stratford, Conn.; b. 9/3/1877, Newburgh, N.Y.; d. 2/15/1956

Charles D. Lay was the first student to receive a degree in LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE at Harvard University. He became the Landscape Architect for the City of New York and was one of the founders of the professional journal, Landscape Architecture.

Oliver Ingraham Lay was a regular exhibitor at the Century Association and the National Academy of Design. His work is in museum collections in the United States and England, including the National Academy of Design, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre Picture Gallery, Stratford-upon-Avon, England.
