James Burney was second Lieutenant with the Adventure, which accompanied the Resolution during Cook's second voyage, 1772-1775. He took command of the Discovery following Cook's death on the third voyage. He became a well known naval writer and had achieved the rank of Rear-Admiral before his death in 1821.
