Biographical History

Charles Pourtales Golightly (1807-85) was educated at Eton and Oriel College, Oxford. A subscriber to Tracts for the Times , he held curacies at Penshurt (Kent) and Godalming (Surrey). Became chaplain at the new chapel of Littlemore, an adjunct of St Mary's Oxford. A single sermon led to a disagreement with John Henry (later Cardinal) Newman (then Vicar of St Mary's), and thereafter he wrote largely against the ritualists, especially attacking Cuddesdon College. Subsequently Golightly was curate of Headington, Oxfordshire, then vicar of Toot Balden, Oxfordshire.
