Biographical History
The International Viola Society (founded 1968) is a world-wide, non-profit organization that governs and supports national and regional organized groups of violists, and continues to promote the ever-increasing standards of excellence in viola performance.
The International Viola Society is dedicated to supporting research in the history of viola, including its performers, makers, teachers, and composers. It largely supports the Primrose International Viola Archive at Brigham Young University by facilitating the exchange and availability of materials to its members.
The International Viola Society has held annual congresses since 1973 with a hiatus between 1975 and 1999. Through these congresses the building of new, high quality instruments and bows have been encouraged, as well as the development of a new viola repertoire through performance and competitions sponsored by the International Viola Society.
The Society has chapters throughout the world.
