Biographical History
William Ignatius Stuhlmueller was born in Hamilton, Ohio on April 2, 1923. A a member of the Passionist community beginning in 1943, he received his Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the Catholic University of America in 1952, and a Doctorate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in 1968. He taught Biblical studies at the Passionist theologate in Chicago and Louisville in the 1950s and 1960s, and then at Saint Meinrad's in Indiana before the theologate merged into the newly formed Catholic Theological Union in 1968. A prolific scholar, Father Stuhlmueller authored 23 books, as well as serving on the editorial boards of the Journal of Biblical Literature and the Catholic Biblical Quarterly. He helped found the Israel Study program at Catholic Theological Union, and he traveled and lectured extensively. After the Second Vatican Council, he was a member of the steering committee of the Women's Ordination Conference, a member of the Roman Catholic/Southern Baptist Scholars Dialogue, a consultant to the Faith and Order Commission of the National Council of Churches, and a consultant to the Lectionary Committee of the International Commission on English in the Liturgy.
