Biographical History

Donald Hatch Andrews was born in 1898 in Southington, Connecticut. He was the son of Mary E. Hatch and Russell G. Andrews. Andrews studied at Philips-Exeter Academy and received his B.A. (1923) and Ph. D. (1923) from Yale University. He joined the chemistry faculty at The Johns Hopkins University in 1927 and served as chair of the department from 1936 to 1944. He retired from Hopkins in 1963, but taught for three more years at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida.

Andrews's primary specialty was the study of the properties of matter at extremely low temperatures. He was also a leader in the construction of a superconducting bolometer, a device which measures heat with infra-red rays. In addition to his research, Andrews was remembered for revitalizing the freshman chemistry program in 1958. Andrews married his first wife, Josephine Adair Veeder in 1939; they had one son, Donald Hatch Andrews, Jr., but divorced in 1950. After his divorce, Andrews married the former Elizabeth Howland. He died on June 3, 1973, and was survived by his wife, son and two grandsons.
