Biographical History
Thomas Holdsworth Blake was an attorney, U.S. congressman from Indiana, and Commissioner of the General Land Office. Blake was born in Maryland and studied law in Washington, D.C. where he was a member of the District of Columbia militia. During the War of 1812, his unit fought at the Battle of Bladensburg in 1814. After the war, he moved to Kentucky and subsequently to Terre Haut, Indiana where he practiced law and was a circuit judge. Blake was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1827 and served one term. President John Tyler appointed Blake Commissioner of the General Land Office in 1842 and he served until 1845. Blake was made president of the Erie and Wabash Canal Co. and visited England as Indiana's financial agent. He died in Cincinnati, Ohio.
