Biographical History
Catesby Ap Roger Jones, scion of a prominent Virginia family, served as an officer in the U.S. Navy from 1836 to 1861, then accepted a commission in the Confederate Navy until 1865. He was commanding officer of the C.S.S. Virginia (Merrimac) and afterward served as an ordnance officer at Columbus, Ga., Charlotte, N.C., and Selma, Ala., where he married Gertrude T. Tartt and settled after the war.

Jones, a native of Virginia, attended the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. He served as a midshipman and lieutenant in the U.S. Navy until 1861.
During the Civil War Jones was involved in the refitting of the U.S.S. Merrimac (C.S.S. Virginia) and served aboard her during the engagement with the U.S.S. Monitor at Hampton Roads Va. 1862 March 9. He participated in the construction of naval vessels and ordnance until the end of the Civil War.
He died in Selma, Ala.
