From the description of Joseph M. Finotti correspondence, 1866-1867. (Unknown). WorldCat record id: 79450252

Joseph M. Finotti was born in Ferrara, Italy, on Sept. 21, 1817. He entered the Society of Jesus at Rome in 1833 and subsequently studied and taught at Jesuit colleges in Italy. In 1845 he was recruited by Fr. James Ryder to work in the Maryland Province of the Society. Following his ordination to the priesthood at Georgetown, D.C., he was made pastor of St. Mary's Church in Alexandria, Va. Father Finotti left the Society of Jesus in 1852 and moved to Boston, where he ministered to parishs in Brookline and Arlington, Mass., and served as literary editor of 'The pilot', the official organ of the Diocese of Boston. In 1877 he became pastor of St. Patricks' parish in Central City, Colo., where he died on Jan. 10, 1879. Father Finotti authored, edited or translated numerous publications, but his magnum opus was the 'Bibliographia Catholica Americana', a catalog of all the Catholic books published in the United States from 1784 to his own day. The first volume, with coverage to 1820, was published in 1872, but the second part, covering the years 1821 to 1875, was never completed.
