Biographical History
Born in Newton Mass. Began mountain climbing at the age of five. One of "The Harvard Five", a group of mountaineers who shaped the origins of American mountaineering beginning in the 1930s. After earning his degree at Harvard College (1936), Carter became a member of the U.S. ski team. Expert on mountain warfare for the U.S. Army during World War II. Translated mountain warfare manuals and articles. Also tested equipment and supplies for mountain troops. Awarded a Commendation for Meritorious Civilian Service. Earned a master's degree at Middlebury College (1947). Taught foreign languages at Milton Academy in Mass. until his retirement (1979). Editor of the American Alpine Journal (1960-1995). Maintained close ties with the National Association of the 10th Mountain Division.
