Biographical History

Maurice Edward Denny , born in February 1886 , was the third generation of his family to be in control of shipbuilding in Dumbarton. Maurice was educated in the English public school system at Tonbridge. He then spent two years at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, followed by a year at Heidelberg. Along with his apprenticeship at the family firm, he undertook a four year course in naval architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Techonology in Boston. He graduatd with first-class honours in 1909 . Maurice became a partner in the business at the age of 24. In 1949, Maurice received an honorary LLD from the University of Glasgow for his signal technical contributions to the industry, and in 1950 he became an honorary member of the Institute of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland. Maurice died in February 1955 .
