Robert Roddam was a British naval officer who rose through the ranks from midshipman to Admiral of the red. He was born in 1719 on his family's ancestral estate, and entered the navy in 1735. He served on board several ships in various parts of the world, taking part in many engagements, and was promoted to lieutenant and then captain. He inherited the family estates on his older brother's death in 1776, and was promoted to admiral soon after. He was generally accounted a good seaman and an energetic officer.
