Biographical History
Hendrik Hertzberg was born on July 23, 1943 in New York, New York. He received an A.B. from Harvard University in 1965. He worked as a correspondent for Newsweek in San Francisco from 1966 to 1967, then served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1969. From 1969 to 1977 he was a staff writer for The New Yorker. He was a speech writer in the Carter White House from February 14, 1977 to the end of the administration in 1981. He became Chief Speech Writer in May 1979. He was with the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University from 1985 to 1988. At the same time, he also was an editor for The New Republic (editor, 1981-1985 and 1989-1991; contributing editor, 1985-1989; and senior editor, 1991-1992). Since 1992 he has served as an executive editor for The New Yorker.
