Biographical History

Author, libertarian, abolitionist, and journalist, of England; became involved with Bronson Alcott's transcendentalist movement and in 1843 (with Alcott) established a transcendentalist utopian community in Harvard, Mass., known as Fruitlands which was dissolved in 1844; later lived at the Harvard Shaker community and in 1846 joined with Joseph Palmer to form the Leominster and Harvard Benevolent Association; returned to England ca. 1850, resuming a career in journalism.
