Biographical History

Dr. Jerry Dallas, professor of History at Delta State University, donated this collection of materials used for his research on cooperative farming in the Mississippi Delta. Most of the material concerns the Delta Cooperative Farm, which was established in 1936 and located near Hillhouse in Bolivar County, Mississippi. Black and white families resided on the farm, which provided a haven for the abused sharecroppers of Northeastern Arkansas who were being persecuted for their involvement with the interracial Southern Tenant Farmers Union. The farm existed until 1957, when the remaining members were accused of promoting racial integration and were asked to leave Mississippi.
