Biographical Note: Dorothy L. Sandler was an American journalist and publicist who worked in Italy.
Born in 1917 in Long Branch, N.J., Sandler received her B.A. from Barnard and did motion picture promotion work before serving as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, she worked for the Central Intelligence Agency before moving to Italy in 1951 where she remained until 1976. Sandler held a series of public relations or editorial jobs, but devoted most of her time to journalism. Sandler was a feature writer for the "Daily American" in Rome (1956-65) and wrote travel articles for various Italian publications and the New York "Times" (1963-70). In 1964 Sandler married C. Grove Haines director of the Johns Hopkins University Bologna Center. In 1973 they retired to Tuscany where they remained until Haines's death in 1976. Sandler returned to the United States, and lived in southern California until her death in 1987.
