Biographical History
The Industrial Relations Section was founded in 1922 with financial support from John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Throughout its history, the Industrial Relations section has functioned as a clearinghouse of information for students, business executives, union leaders, and government officials interested in topics as diverse as personnel administration, unionism, collective bargaining, the economics of the labor market, and management organization and development, company benefit plans and government social security programs. Traditionally the Industrial Relations Section's research efforts have shifted to mirror contemporary issues of the American economy. It has the oldest and largest industrial relations library service in the country, provides financial support for the research of graduate students and faculty members, and is the workshop for hundreds of undergraduates writing course papers and senior theses. The Industrial Relations section has been housed in the university's Firestone library since 1948, in space provided by a gift from the Class of 1926.
