Stone, William S. (William Sebastian), 1910-1968

William Sebastian Stone (b. 1910, Cape Girardeau, Mo.-d. Dec. 2, 1968), U.S. Air Force officer, graduated from West Point in 1934 and completed flying training the following year. Two years later, he completed a master's degree in meteorology and was assigned as Weather Officer at Fort Lewis, Washington. After serving as an instructor at the Military Academy, he was assigned to head the Air Corps Weather Research project in 1942, and later served as chief of staff and deputy commander, Air Corps Weather Wing, with temporary duty in the European, Far Eastern, and Pacific theaters. In 1944 he was appointed director of Weather Services for the Army Air Force in the Pacific Ocean area and for the U.S. Strategic Air Forces in Guam during bombing raids on Japan. In the early 1950s, General Stone served as division chief, U.S. Air Forces HQ in Europe, then transferred to Air Force HQ in Washington, D.C. as director of personnel planning. After serving as superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy for three years, he was assigned as deputy chief of staff, personnel, at Air Force HQ. In 1966 he became air deputy to the Supreme Allied Commander Europe.
