Born June 4, 1915, Cicero, IL, and died February 15, 1985, Chicago, IL. Professor of Theology, author. Francis L. Filas, S.J., joined the Society of Jesus in 1932 at the age of seventeen. He was ordained in 1945. He received his B.A. and M.A. in philosophy from Loyola University Chicago and his Doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Bellarmin Pontifical University in West Baden Springs, IN. Filas was an instructor of math, religion, and music at St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, OH, and of math, English, Latin, and music at University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy. In 1950 he joined the Theology department of Loyola University Chicago as a professor, a position he remained in until his death. Filas' scholary interests centered on three subjects: St. Joseph, sex education and family relationships, and the Shroud of Turin. He was one of the leaders of the movement to introduce St. Joseph's name into the Eucharistic Prayer of the Roman Canon of the Mass; one of the pioneers of the Cana movement; and a well known expert on sex education and family issues. In his later years he focused on the Shroud of Turin, attempting to ascertain its authenticity. His documentary "Shroud of Turin" aired regularly on Chicago televsion on Good Friday from 1951 to 1974. Francis L. Filas, S.J., passed away on February 15, 1985, at Loyola University Chicago.
