Biographical History

T. E. Armstrong was Captain of Company K. of the 3rd North Carolina Troops. Daniel H. Hill was a Confederate general, born in York District, S.C. He was also a professor of mathematics at Washington College (1849-1854) and Davidson College (1854-1859); and superintendent of the North Carolina Military Institute (1859-1861). After the war he settled in Charlotte, N.C., where he established a monthly magazine and a weekly newspaper. He served as president of the University of Arkansas from 1877-1884 and of the Middle Georgia Military and Agricultural College from 1886-1889. Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson was born Jan. 21, 1824 in Clarksburg, Va. [now in W.Va.], and died May 10, 1863, Guinea Station [now Guinea], Va. He was a Confederate general in the American Civil War, one of its most skillful tacticians, who gained his sobriquet "Stonewall" by his stand at the First Battle of Bull Run (called First Manassas by the South) in 1861.
