Biographical History
Henry R. Fortmann was born February 28, 1919 in Frederic, Wisconsin. He received his B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin, his M.S. from Oregon State and Ph.D. from Cornell University. He joined Pennsylvania State University on February 1, 1949. In 1957, Dr. Fortmann was appointed as Assistant Director of the Pennsylvania Agricultural Experimental Station at University Park. Dr. Fortmann served with the Department of Agronomy for 30 years, retiring in 1979 as emeritus professor of agronomy.He was the author or co-author of over 90 research publications. He developed and released two orchard grass varieties, "Pennlate" and "Pennmead" used widely in the United States and abroad. He died on December 6, 1981 at the age of 62.
