Biographical History

Princeton University's Department of Chemical Engineering was founded in 1922 as a special program jointly operated by the Department of Chemistry and the School of Engineering. A curriculum was developed and Chemical Engineering became a full-fledged Department in 1930, taking up residence in the old chemical laboratory recently vacated by the Department of Chemistry. The size of the faculty, the number of students enrolled, and the amount of research conducted increased steadily until 1962 when the Department moved its facilities to Maclean Hall. Research interests of the Department have continually broadened, and today include Thermodynamics, Materials Synthesis, and Fluid Mechanics to name a few.
