Biographical History

Pedro de Alberni, born in Spain, was a military leader in Nayarit, Mexico, from about 1774 until 1789, when he was sent as commander of the Catalonia Volunteers to the garrison at Nootka. The expedition, led by Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra, was sent by the Viceroy of Mexico, Count of Revillagigedo, to give protection from the Russians and British to the Spanish possessions on the west coast of what is now Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Later, Alberni was appointed commandant of San Francisco from 1796-1800 and of Monterey from 1801-02.
