Biographical History
Formed by the merger, as of Jan. 1, 1988, of the Lutheran Church in America, the American Lutheran Church (1961-1987), and the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches; includes 65 synods and ca. 11,000 congregations, with headquarters in Chicago, Ill.
The goal of the American Lutheran Church Women in World Mission Oral History Project, and its continuation, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Women in Global Mission Oral History Project, was to preserve oral narratives of the experiences of Lutheran women missionaries during the period 1930-1980. There were 247 potential narrators for the oral history project, qualifying by being a married or single woman who served at least 10 years as amissionary in one of the following countries: Brazil, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Colombia, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Madagascar, Papua New Guinea, Nigeria, South Africa, Taiwan, Argentina, Chile, Ethiopia, Guyana, Liberia, Nepal and Tanzania.
