Biographical History
The Town and Gown Council was founded in 1982 by four women: Betty Anne Stanton, Trish Duncan, Ann Hughes who served as the first president of the Council, and Beryl Colbourn who was the First Lady of UCF at the time. Their aim was not to raise funds, but to plan and host functions for both entertainment and education in order to strengthen relationships between UCF and the greater Orlando community. The Town and Gown Council aimed to act as a liaison between the community and the university.
The Council holds quarterly luncheon meetings in addition to hosting events to draw attention to academic, artistic, and athletic developments at UCF. It works closely with the university's president, and in 1989 it established a scholarship for non-traditional students at UCF. Each member of the council works on a committee, such as, hospitality, publicity or scholarship, and each committee has a chair. These chairs sit on the Council's Board of Directors together with the members of the Executive Committee who are the president, vice president, immediate past president, secretary, treasurer, and university advisor.
