Biographical History

Lawrence Bogorad was born on August 29, 1921 in Tashkent, the son of Boris Bogorad and Florence Bernard. He came to the United States in 1922 and was naturalized in 1935. He received his B.S. (1942) and Ph.D (1949) from the University of Chicago.

Bogorad was a faculty member at the University of Chicago in the Department of Botany from 1948 to 1951. He became an assistant professor in that department from 1953 to 1957, and became an associate professor in 1957 and a professor in 1961. He accepted a professorship at Harvard University in 1967, and he is currently emeritus faculty at the Department of Mollecular and Celluar Biology.

Bogorad served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. He was a visiting investigator at the Rockefeller Institute, New York from 1951 to 1953 and was a Merck Fellow at the same time. In 1960 he was a Fullbright Fellow. In 1963 he received the Career Research Award from the National Institutes of Health. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Bogorad’s professional memberships include the American Society of Biological Chemistry, the American Society of Cell Biology, the American Botanical Society, the National Academy of Sciences, and the American Society of Plant Physiologists (president, 1968-9).

Bogorad was the Associate Editor of the Botanical Gazette (1959-67) and of Plant Physiology (1965-66), and was on the editorial committee of the Annual Review of Plant Physiology (1963-7). He was on the editorial board of Biochimica Biophysica Acta (1967-9) and the Journal of Cell Biology (1967-70). Along with J.H. Weil, Bogorad is the editor of Nucleic Acids and Protein Synthesis in Plants (1976).

On June 29, 1943 Bogorad married Rosalyn G. Sagen. They had two children, Leonard Paul and Kiki M. Lee.
