Born in Beaufort, South Carolina, Robert Woodward Barnwell Elliott (1840-1887) was the son of Stephen Elliott and Charlotte Bull Barnwell. In 1861, Elliott graduated from South Carolina College and enlisted in the Confederate Army as an aide to General A. R. Lawton. Following the Civil War, he was ordained an Episcopal minister and served as rector at St. Philip’s Church in Atlanta, Georgia, until he was appointed the first missionary bishop of West Texas in 1874. During his tenure, Elliott established twenty-four churches and nine rectories, including St. Mary’s Hall in San Antonio.
