Biographical History

Sophia Tierong Zhu was born in Shanghai on February 6, 1915. She graduated from Shanghai University in 1937 and received a M.A. in sociology from Yale University in 1948. She taught and worked in the Department of Foreign Languages at Hunan Medical University in Changsha from 1950 until her retirement in 1988. During the Anti-Rightist Campaign and the Cultural Revolution, Zhu was labeled an ultra-rightist and a special agent suspect. Both labels were redressed in 1979. Beginning in 1979, Zhu worked with and befriended many English Language Instructors (ELIs) from Yale University after Yale and Hunan Medical University re-established ties. Zhu continued to work closely with ELIs after her retirement. She died in Changsha, China, on August 9, 2009.
