Biography
U.S. Representative John J. McFall, Democrat of Manteca (Calif.), served eleven terms in Congress (1957-78). He represented San Joaquin, Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Mono, Tuolumne and portions of Sacramento and Stanislaus counties. McFall was Majority Whip during the 93rd & 94th Congresses and was three times elected Speaker Pro Tempore. His committee assignments included Appropriations, Transportation and Defense.
McFall was born in Manteca (1917), attended public schools there, and, after graduation from the University of California (1938), received a J.D. from Berkeley's Boalt Hall law school (1941). Following service in the Army Security Intelligence Corps (1942-46), he returned to Manteca where he was first elected Mayor (1948-1950), then State Assemblyman (1951-56).
