Biographical History
Rupert England was born in 1878 in Yorkshire, England and was educated at Hull Grammar School. He was the First Officer of the Morning on the British relief expeditions, 1902-1903 and 1903-1904, organized to assist the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904 (leader Robert Falcon Scott) in McMurdo Sound. He then went to Nigeria for 12 months. Between 1907 and 1908, England was the captain of Nimrod on the British Antarctic Expedition, 1907-1909 (leader Ernest Henry Shackleton), but was dismissed after the first year. On his return, he married, left the sea and founded his own business. He served in the First World War and retired as Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. He died in 1942.
