Barkin was born on Dec. 15, 1932 in New York City; studied with Karol Rathaus, Saul Novak, and Leo Kraft at Queens College, CUNY (BA, 1954), with Irving Fine, Harold Shapero, and Arthur Berger at Brandeis Univ. (MFA, 1954 and Ph. D, 1971), and with Boris Blacher at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik (1956-57); taught at Queens College (1964-70), the Univ. of Michigan (1970-74), and Princeton Univ. (1974), before joining the faculty at UCLA in 1974; contributed articles to various journals, including Perspectives of new music, of which she became editor in 1964; member, executive committee, American Society of University Composers, 1967-69; compositions include: Woodwind quartet (1956), Essay for orchestra (1957), String trio (1957), String quartet (1969), and Inward and outward bound (for chamber ensemble, 1975).
