Biographical History

The 85th Indiana Infantry was organized on 2 September 1862 in Terre Haute, Indiana. In March of 1863 the unit engaged Confederate troops at the Battle of Thompson's Station in Tennessee. The Union forces surrendered and most of the troops of the 85th were captured and sent to Libby Prison. Released and returned to their own camp in June, they were greeted with a welcoming celebration.
