Lee Saunders Gerow (b. Mar. 29, 1891-d. May19, 1982) was born in Petersburg, Virginia. He received his commissione in the infantry in 1913, and advanced to the rank of brigadier general in March 1943. He served as Assistant Division Commander of the 85th Infantry Division from 1943 to 1945. He retired from Army service in July 1949.
Gerow was born March 29, 1891. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1913, and was commissioned in 1916. He was promoted in 1916 to Captain at Fort Snelling, Minn. He was promoted in 1918 to Major; stationed in Washington, D.C., and in May 1919 was assigned to the American Army of Occupation, 5th Infantry in Coblenz, Germany. From 1919 to 1929 he was detailed at Fort Benning, Ga. and Western Military Academy, Alton, Ill.; he attended the Command and Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas during 1930-1931. He was assigned in June 1931-1934 as Assistant Executive to the Assistant Secretary of War. During 1935 he was assigned to the 4th Infantry, Fort George Wright, Washington State, and in 1941 sent to Camp Shelby, Hattiesburg, Miss. to train the 338th Infantry Regiment. He commanded the 85th Division in 1941 at Casa Blanca.
He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1942. He commanded the 338th Infantry Regiment, 85th Division which captured Mount Altuzzo, Italy on September 18, 1944. He retired from the military in 1948.
