Biographical History
The Tennessee Historical Commission and Memphis State University developed a program in the late 1970's to locate, record and evaluate architectural and historical properties in designated areas in western Tennessee. Weakley County was designated a project site in 1980.
The Tennessee Historical Commission was founded in 1919 by the 61st General Assembly to collect and preserve Tennessee military records relating to World War I. In 1937 the Commission was administratively attached to the Department of Conservation and Environment where it remains today. The Commission is responsible for evaluation, acquisition, and preservation of historic sites. It is also responsible for the selection and erection of historical markers, publication of books and documents on Tennessee history, and the administration of the properties and programs established under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966.
