Edward Everett Nicholson (Dean Nick) began as an instructor in the Chemistry Dept. at the University of Minnesota in 1895. He was promoted to Asst. Professor in 1900; in 1915 he accepted a joint appointment as full professor and assistant dean. In 1917, that appointment was changed to Dean of Student Affairs (jointly with the chemistry professorship), but in 1919 Nicholson became a full time Dean of Student Affairs.
Edward E. Nicholson was born on February 9, 1873 in Yellow Springs, Ohio. He earned his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Nebraska. He joined the faculty of the chemistry department at the University of Minnesota as an instructor in 1895. He was promoted to assistant professor in 1900 and professor in 1915. Also in 1915, he was made assistant dean. In 1917, he was appointed as dean of student affairs, in addition to his duties as professor. Beginning in 1919, Dean Nicholson no longer taught courses and focused solely on his administrative duties. Fondly known as "Dean Nick," he continued to serve the University as dean until he retired in 1941. Dean Nicholson died on June 28, 1949.
