Biographical History

The Industrial Relations Center (IRC) at the University of Minnesota was established in 1945 as the Industrial Relations Training and Research Center to train people for management and labor leadership. At the time it was established, the IRC was one of only seven such centers found at major universities throughout the country. The IRC offered special courses to those working in labor and management and studied labor-management issues in the Northwest. In 1953, the Master of Arts in Industrial Relations (MAIR) degree was authorized by the Graduate School and in 1964, the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Industrial Relations was approved. An evening M.A. degree was established in 1985. The IRC is currently housed within the Carlson School of Management with a mission of studying the relationships of employment to the fields of human resources and industrial relations.
