Lawyer, Kaskaskia, Illinois; U.S. district attorney, 1827-1829; lieutenant colonel, Black Hawk War; U.S. senator, 1843-1845; Illinois House of Representatives, 1851-1852; Illinois Supreme Court justice, 1841-1843, 1857-1878.

Illinois lawyer and jurist. Postmaster in Kaskaskia, 1821, later resident of Carlyle Illinois. Served as United States district attorney for Illinois, 1827-1829. Presided as circuit court judge, 1835-1841 and 1855-1857. Elected to United States Senate in 1843 and served until 1849. Illinois state representative, 1851-1852. Served as judge of the Illinois Supreme Court, 1841-1843 and 1857-1878.

Fought in Black Hawk War, 1832, achieving rank of lieutenant colonel. Married Eliza Morrison, daughter of William Morrison, in 1823.
