American Congregational minister and social reformer, as well as the author of many books and hymns.

Washington Gladden was born on February 11, 1836, in the village of Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Williams College in 1859. A talented writer, he considered a career in journalism, tried his hand at teaching school, but, ultimately, heeded his call to the ministry. Throughout his career, which spanned the Civil War to World War I, he was a prolific writer and speaker. He dealt with issues of poverty, labor relations, municipal reform and social welfare. He died in 1918 at age 82.
